The Drawing Room
The Drawing Room began as a specialist venue revitalizing works on paper. It has since expanded to various artistic formats grounded on defined sensibilities that map the complex scope of thinking attributed to the terrain of contemporary Philippine art.
The works of Roberto Bulatao Feleo presented in this year’s Asia NOW Paris are derived from Philippine Mythology, defining the present and the afterlives. They consist of the following themes: (1) From Death comes an abundance of life on Earth, as man passes on from this Life. (2) Man crosses the black river, called the Gimukodan, in order to reach the Underworld, the common man’s paradise. (3) There are two afterlives. The Skyworld is for the warrior class while the Underworld is for the common man. (4) The vanishing shaman (Babaylan) is about to cross the Land of Deceased to find a cure for an ailing person on earth. (5) The decapitated warrior spirit (Pinteng) is awarded with a ball of fire to replace its head which was lost to the enemy. From the Skyworld, the Pinteng descends to earth inciting living warriors to war. The Pinteng is kind to the children and the elderly. (5) The Pinteng urging on the Ilokano warriors to war (Basi Revolt).
Roberto Bulatao Feleo is represented in the following institutions: The National Museum of the Philippines, The Cultural Center of the Philippines, The Metropolitan Museum of Manila, The Vargas Museum, and The BenCab Museum in Baguio City.
