Exhibiting Gallery
Esther Schipper
Throughout its more than three decades of exhibition practice, Esther Schipper has provided a platform for artists to present projects that mark novel territories, initiate important conceptual departures, and bring forth new bodies of works. For its first participation in Asia NOW, Esther Schipper shows a curated presentation focusing around the work of Hyunsun Jeon and Tao Hui.
In her paintings, Hyunsun Jeon uses a distinct palette including greens and blues associated with Korean painting. Executed in watercolor, Jeon’s paintings focus both on a material flatness but of representation itself. Her iconography includes shapes read intellectually and intuitively as three dimensional, but with an artful two dimensionality that highlights the insistent flatness of her compositions.
Tao Hui creates immersive video-installations that bend the boundaries of fiction and reality to address cultural and identity related issues. His works are visceral and provocative, yet enlightening and always imbued with a strong emotional power and a sense of displacement, inviting the viewers to confront themselves with their own cultural history, ways of living and social identities.
The gallery recently shown an exhibition in both its Berlin and Seoul galleries focusing on Korean contemporary art (Dui Jip Ki, 2023).
