Fivefold : an Anatomy of Chaos
A con tempo(rary) exploration of South Asian lives.
Fivefold brings together an art performance and a participatory food installation exploring how repetition and layering give rise to order within illusory chaos.
In Sehaj Malik’s performance, the body moves continuously within a prescribed space for five hours, its oscillations leaving successive marks across the surface. What appears random, almost chaotic, is bound by instruction and the physical limits of the body, with form emerging through the accumulation of each gesture. This interplay between structure and unpredictability moves to the table, drawing from South Asian culinary practices built through layers, unexpected combinations and varied textures. Chaat, a popular South Asian street food, becomes a participatory medium: visitors layer and mix ingredients through a five step process to create their own composition. Through participatory repetition, the table shifts as ingredients accumulate, disappear and are rearranged. Like the marks left by the body, the table records the actions that produce an imprint each time.
The two experiences come into dialogue between observing and participating, as rhythmic, iterative interventions resolve into a singular composition. Presented by Still Other Collective, bringing contemporary South Asian art and gastronomy together to spark curiosity and new ways of engaging with culture.

Sehaj Malik is a final-year masters student at École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts in Paris. She is working under the atelier of Werhner Bouwens.
