Intersections Gallery
Intersections represents both established and emerging artists, mostly based in Southeast Asia, with a primary focus on the emerging market of contemporary Burmese art.
Nge Lay’s solo show at Asia NOW 2024 features a curated selection of her works, including three new pieces specially created for Asia NOW 2024. This collection, spanning from 2009 to 2024, serves as a testament to the artist’s bold style and unyielding focus on gender issues. Through a diverse range of media — including photography, sculpture, video, and ceramics — Nge Lay’s indomitable spirit of freedom shines bright. For the past 15 years, Nge Lay has been a transformative force in Myanmar’s contemporary art scene. In a landscape long dominated by tradition and male artists, she has consistently pushed the boundaries of artistic expression. Her work, shaped by her Buddhist faith, explores the transient nature of existence and the inexorable flow of time. As a woman, she draws inspiration from the experiences of motherhood and confronts contemporary gender issues.
This show is more than a retrospective; it is a celebration of Nge Lay’s remarkable journey from Yangon to her exile in Paris, as a woman artist committed to challenging societal norms. Her creativity, flourishing even in the face of adversity, speaks volumes about the power of art to transcend boundaries and spark change.
