carlier | gebauer, based in Berlin and Madrid, presents a solo booth dedicated to Filipino-American artist Paul Pfeiffer at Asia Now 2024.
A highlight of the presentation will be five of Pfeiffer’s most iconic works from his photographic series “The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse”, first created in 2000 and premiered at the Whitney Museum of American Art. This series consists of digitally manipulated images that remove basketball teams from iconic NBA game scenes, leaving only the crowds, arenas, and individually highlighted players in focus. Through this work, Pfeiffer explores themes of celebrity, spectatorship, and the erasure of individuality in mass media culture. This iconic selection will stand in dialogue to a work from Pfeiffer’s “Incarnator” series, which he began in collaboration with Bellas Artes Projects in Bagac, Bataan, Philippines. The “Incarnator” sculpture channels the Santo Niño de Cebú, one of the most revered devotional icons in the Philippines, through the image of pop superstar Justin Bieber, whose persona has been transformed into an unmistakable symbol of 21st-century capitalist values.
Paul Pfeiffer’s seminal retrospective, “Prologue to the Story of the Birth of Freedom”, opened at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles in late 2023 and is set to travel to the Guggenheim Bilbao in November 2024.
