Zhang Yi (born in 1989 in Chengdu) currently works and lives in Shanghai. Her artwork often revolves around the experiences of women in both the workplace and daily life. Zhang Yi is self-taught in sewing and fabric transformation techniques, and her pieces involve dyeing, cutting, and collage of fabrics. She draws inspiration from everyday life and historical texts like "Exemplary Women" to reimagine existing narratives about women. Her first solo exhibition took place in May 2021 at the Tabula Rasa Gallery in Beijing during the Beijing Art Gallery Week.

Recently, her creative work has continued to explore the female body as its main subject, where parts of the body are depicted as broken steel bars, pieces of wood, or thorns, or are pierced and stretched to express the artist's personal experience of pain. The works include raised fabric shapes that seem to reveal unknown secrets hidden within the body.

Some of her recent exhibitions include: "Deviant Comfort," Tabula Rasa Gallery (Beijing, 2023); an individual exhibition project by Zhang Yi, Tabula Rasa Gallery booth, ART021 Art Fair (Shanghai, 2021); "She, They," a group exhibition, Fuwang Space (Beijing, 2021); "Watching the Fire Across the River," a group exhibition, LINSEED (Shanghai, 2021); "Harmony," Baogu Art Center (Shanghai, 2022); "Roarrrrr," a solo exhibition, Tabula Rasa Gallery (Beijing, 2021), and more. Zhang Yi holds a master's degree from the University of Southern California and completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Minnesota in the United States.
