Tang Contemporary Art - Booth A 104
Tang Contemporary Art was established in 1997 in Bangkok, later establishing galleries in Beijing and Hong Kong. Tang Contemporary Art is fully committed to producing critical projects and exhibitions to promote Contemporary Chinese art regionally and worldwide, and encourage a dynamic exchange between Chinese artists and those abroad.
For ASIA NOW 2019, Tang Contemporary Art presents a dialogue between a group of thought-provoking Asian contemporary artists, including Heri Dono, Rodel Tapaya, Natee Utarit, Wu Wei, Zhao Zhao, Huang Yishan, Wang Xuan and Cai Lei.
Heri Dono’s Pembawa Baterai Superhero presents his reflection on social and political turmoil, pop culture and myths seen through Indonesian eyes.
Combining a piercing social commentary and the tribal legend of Lake Pinamaloy, Filipino artist Rodel Tapaya shows how marine life is contaminated by human waste and activities in his painting Big Catch.
Similarly, Chinese artist Zhao Zhao alludes to the subject of air pollution through a pictorial language of porcelain blues. The Sky series is his idyllic and semi-abstract illustration of human intrusion into nature. Vincent van Gogh’s “Portrait of Joseph Roulin” is re-imagined in Zhao Zhao’s One Second series using a time-consuming technique of embroidery.
Sensual desire is clearly manifested in Wu Wei’s work Pelago through the exploration of materials and space in his work, specifically the textual interplay of paper and fur.
This ensemble of artists present the essence of their latest reflections, thus establishing a multifarious polylogue of the contemporary societal dilemma : civilization versus tradition.
